What is your intended launch date for the new site? Are there any outside considerations that might affect the schedule (i.e., PR launch, tradeshow, annual report)?

Do you have a specific budget range already established for this project? If so, can you share it with us (doing so allows us to develop a proposal tailored to your budget). Can this project be divided into phases to accommodate budget and timing constraints?

What are your primary online business objectives with the new website? What are your secondary objectives? (Examples include increased sales, marketing/branding awareness, and fewer customer service calls.) Please discuss both long- and short-term goals

What is the main business problem you hope to solve with the new website? How will you measure the success of the solution?

What financial benefits are you seeking from the web: pure revenues, increased customer numbers, increased indirect revenues, brand building and other non-tangible revenues?

If you currently have a website, please answer the following questions.

Do you feel your current site promotes a favorable user experience? Why or why not?

What level of interest have your customers shown in your current web presence?

How many people (as far as you can tell) access your site on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis? How do you measure usage? Do you forecast usage to increase after the site launch and by how much?

What specific areas of your current site do you feel are successful? Why are they successful?

What shortcomings exist with your current site and what three things would you change on the site today if you could?

Have you conducted usability tests or gathered user feedback for your current site? If so, how long ago? Please include any reports or findings.

Is your current site currently ranking well in major search engines for desired keywords? (important because high ranking pages will need to be retained in some manner)

How do most people find out about your current website?

Audience/Desired Action

Who is your target audience? Choose a typical user and profile in detail. Include occupation, age range, gender, online frequency, online activities, and any other relevant information. Profile more than one if applicable. Use as much detail as possible in profiling your target user. Profile more than one type if appropriate.

What is the primary “action” the user should take when coming to your site (ex: make a purchase, become a member, search for information, send their email address, call for more information)?

Please describe what you would consider to be a typical visitor session on your website. Start from the moment the visitor lands on your home page, and walk us through how you perceive the visitor will use the website.

Perception

Use a few adjectives to describe how the user should perceive the new site. (Examples include prestigious, friendly, corporate, fun, forward thinking, innovative, and cutting edge.) Is this different than the current image perception?

How is your company currently perceived offline? Do you want to carry the same kind of message through your website?

How does your company differentiate itself from competitors? Do you think your current audience differentiates you from your competition?

Content/Structure

Where will the content for the new site originate from? Will it come from an existing site? Is it already written? Will you be creating the content in-house, or do you plan on using an outside writer and/or content provider?

What is the basic structure of the content, and how is it organized? Is it a complete overhaul of the current site or an expansion?

Do you already have a sitemap or outline for the new site? Do you have an idea regarding the different website sections/pages? If so, please provide detail.

Creative/Functional Requirements

Describe visual elements or content that should be utilized from your current site or marketing materials (logo, color scheme, navigation, naming conventions, and so on).

List the website addresses of any sites you find compelling. These don’t necessarily have to be competitors, or even sites related to your industry. What specifically do you like (and dislike) about these sites?

Do you have any brand or corporate design guidelines that should be followed (colors, etc.)? Do you have any recent brochures, stock or other images or other marketing material that we should see?

Do you anticipate having highly functional elements in the website? For example, online forms that, when submitted, would email the form data to you, or store the data in a database; site search functionality; ability for visitors to register and manage an account; ability to register for events; ability to process credit cards online, etc.?

Are you interested in a mobile version of your new website or web application?

Are you happy to use library/stock material for some content, or would you rather create or commission original content?

Marketing/Updating

Briefly, what are your short-term marketing plans (specifically, for the site launch and the 12 months following launch)?

Do you have an existing or planned marketing strategy in mind to promote the new site (for example search engine optimization, email marketing, social media, traditional marketing, etc.)? If so, please describe.

Do you intend to keep the site updated? If so, how often? Who is responsible for updating and providing content?

If you feel that content on your site will need to be updated on a regular basis, would you like the ability to update content on the site yourself using an easy-to-use content management system?

Are you currently involved in any social media marketing such as Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn?
